ABRSM publishes Piano Star books for young learners

6 years ago

ABRSM has released Piano Star, a new series of repertoire books to inspire young pianists and help them to develop their musical skills. The books offer a rich selection of imaginative solo pieces in addition to some duets for pupils and teachers to play together, along with activities to enhance learning.

"The Piano Star series is full of vibrant, contrasting and well-crafted solos and duets for the beginner pianist. Well done ABRSM - this will quickly become a popular addition to early piano lessons. I am certainly looking forward to using it with some of my pupils."
Sally Cathcart, musician, teacher and director of The Curious Piano Teachers

With over 70 newly composed pieces and arrangements from a host of leading educational composers, the titles are brought to life with colour illustrations.

There are three books in the series:

  • Piano Star 1 is suitable for learners who have completed, or nearly completed, their first tutor book;
  • Piano Star 2 is at ABRSM Prep Test level and provides alternative repertoire for that assessment;
  • Piano Star 3 helps move players towards Grade 1.

The variety of repertoire provides a rich mix of musical styles, with techniques introduced progressively.

Commentary on Piano Star

Aisling Greally, piano teacher and co-compiler of the series alongside David Blackwell, said: “Children will be immediately hooked by the new series, Piano Star. The wide variety of attractive and accessible pieces is sure to capture their imaginations and have them running to the piano to try them out! “There are cute, funny and quirky themes, exploring familiar and surprising scenarios, within a variety of sounds. Children can sing the words as they play, enjoy the activities, play duets along with their teachers and admire the delightful colour illustrations by Tim Budgen... and all of this even before taking their Grade 1 exam!” Penny Milsom, ABRSM’s Product and Services Executive Director said: “We’re really excited to publish a new range of appealing and accessible pieces to inspire young pianists and help them to develop their musical skills. Piano Star provides a wealth of useful teaching material which children will love to play. “ABRSM is committed to inspiring musical achievement at every age and level. We know that a beginner’s experience is vital to their musical journey and are delighted to offer this new material that will spark the imagination and help learners progress.”
